My Two Nights challenge in June nearly failed. I had a small surgery recently and that naturally postponed everything. But after the almost-full-recovery I rushed to the woods on the last day of June.
Soukkionlampi is a small pond in Taipalsaari, near Lappeenranta. First I missed the turn-off to the pond, since it’s a quite a tiny road that goes easily unnoticed right after you turn to Soukkiontie. (You can find it from Google Maps, though, and I also drew it to Waze navigation app.) I accommodated to the goahti that is actually more spacious than you first think. There is room for several adults to sleep and to even more to sit. This goahti is quite dark even during the summer, so it might be a good idea to have a head torch with you or be prepared to put up a fire.
You are allowed to swim in the pond (fishing is prohibited) and a few swimmers showed up during my stay. I couldn’t throw away my winter fur (as we say in Finnish when you go swimming first time during the summer) because I wasn’t allowed to swim yet with my wound. That’s why I made myself comfortable in the goahti and started to read Deadly Décisions by Kathy Reichs that I brought with me. Soon I found out that there was a wasp nest straight above my head. I don’t know if I am allergic to wasps and I wasn’t especially eager to find out. I decided to move my mattress to the other end of the goahti, just to be sure.
Kesäkuun osalta Two Nights -projektin kanssa meinasi tulla kiire. Olin hiljattain pienessä leikkauksessa, josta toipuminen tietysti häiritsi harrastuksia. Niinpä kiirehdin kuun viimeisenä päivänä pienelle metsäretkelle.
Soukkionlampi sijaitsee Taipalsaarella, melko lähellä Lappeenrantaa. Ajellessani lammelle joudin hieman etsimään viimeistä risteystä, koska se sijaitsee hieman huomaamattomasti heti Soukkiontien risteyksen jälkeen. (Tosin se löytyy Google Mapsista ja piirsin sen myös Waze-navigaattorisovellukseen.) Majoittauduin kodalle, jossa on kokonsa puolesta tilaa yllättävän monelle nukkujalle ja vielä useammalle löytyy istumapaikka. Kota on kuitenkin hyvin pimeä sisältä kesälläkin, joten kannattaa varautua tekemään tuli tai ottamaan otsalamppu mukaan.
Lammessa voisi käydä uimassa (kalastaminen on kielletty) ja paikalle ilmaantuikin muutama uimari. Itse en tuoreen haavan kanssa saa kuitenkaan vielä uida, joten talviturkki jäi heittämättä. Tyydyin siis vetäytymään kotaan ja lukemaan mukaan ottamaani Kathy Reichsin Deadly Décisionsia. Huomasin kuitenkin pian aivan pääni yläpuolella ampiaispesän. En tiedä olenko allerginen ampiaisenpistolle, enkä erityisesti halunnut ottaa asiasta myöskään selvää. Siirsin siis makuupaikkani kodan vastakkaiseen nurkkaan, jolloin en olisi aivan ampiaisten kulkureitillä.
