I have been thinking about starting a new project: going through all the hiking trails near my home. Though I would love to leave for a longer trip, my budget doesn’t really allow that at the moment. And then again I have been pondering that quite often the nature destinations close to home tend to be way too foreign. It’s somehow easier to dream about the land far far away. In addition I was thinking that I could really do my share of promoting the local traveling as an ecological choice and show some interesting places in southeast Finland.
Local hiking destinations in Finland can usually be found from every town’s website and other good source is Retkipaikka. Many lean-tos and wilderness huts for overnight trips are listed on Laavu.org. Regional Council of South Karelia has a website with clear directions (only in Finnish, though) how find the trail ends in here.
In early May I did one of these local trips to Taipalsaari. In the village of Haikola there is a trail following the Karvajalanjoki wetlands, which is also accessible with a wheelchair. The trail is about 1 km (0.6 miles) one way and in the other end there is a boardwalk that leads to a lean-to. There was no one at the lean-to, but the trail log informed me that there had been people today. Someone had written that he came paddling. There is enough space in the lean-to for a few people to sleep and next to it is a wood shed and a privy.
I walked also to the other end of the boardwalk where there is a wider platform, but not an actual place to attach a canoe or a boat. The wetlands opens into a small bay which leads to the Niivansalmi of Lake Saimaa. Suddenly I noticed a swan couple nesting on the other side of the bay. I have seen plenty of swans, but never one sitting in its nest.
This 2 km (1.2 mile) hike is not a much of an adventure, but the short distance and the easy terrain makes the Haikola trail a good choice for someone with a disability or small children.
Olen ajatellut ottaa projektiksi lähialueiden retkeilyreittien ja -kohteiden koluamisen. Vaikka mieli tekisi jo taas pidemmälle reissulle, niin budjetti sitä ei valitettavasti salli. Ja toisaalta olen pohdiskellut, että usein oman kotiseudun luontokohteet jäävät varsin vieraiksi, kun helppo on ajautua unelmoimaan kaukomatkoista. Lisäksi ajattelin, että voisin samalla osaltani promotoida lähimatkailua ekologisena vaihtoehtona ja esitellä Kaakkois-Suomessa olevia kiinnostavia kohteita.
Paikallisretkeilyn kohteita löytää usein lähimmän kaupungin nettisivuilta ja toinen hyvä lähde on Retkipaikka. Yöpymistä varten laavuja ja autiotupia voi etsiä Laavu.org-sivustolta. Etelä-Karjalan tarjontaa esittelee varsin selkein ohjein Etelä-Karjalan liiton sivut.
Toukokuun alkupuolella lähdin heittämään yhden tällaisen reissun Taipalsaaren puolelle. Haikolan kylässä on Karvajalanjoen kosteikon varrelle tehty luontopolku, joka on esteetön myös pyörätuolilla liikkuville. Reitti on reilun kilometrin yhteen suuntaan ja polun toisessa päässä on laavulle vievät laiturimaiset pitkospuut. Laavulla ei ollut ketään, mutta vieraskirjassa oli merkintöjä samalta päivältä. Joku mainitsi tulleensa paikalle meloen. Laavuun mahtuu muutama ihminen nukkumaan ja vieressä on puuvaja sekä huussi.
Kävelin pitkospuiden toiseenkin päähän, jossa on pieni levike, mutta ei varsinaista kiinnityspaikkaa kajakille tai veneelle. Kosteikko avautuu pieneen lahteen, joka johtaa Saimaan Niivansalmelle. Lahden toisella puolella huomasin yllättäen joutsenpariskunnan pesimispuuhissa. Joutsenia toki on tullut vastaan useinkin, mutta en ole aiemmin nähnyt tuota lintua istumassa pesässään.
Kovin suurta seikkailua tästä reilun kahden kilometrin lenkistä ei välttämättä kehkeydy, mutta Haikolan luontopolku sopii helppoutensa puolesta hyvin liikuntarajoitteisille sekä pienten lasten kanssa liikkuville.
