Day 14: Wayah Crest

Before leaving Franklin I got a ride with some other hikers once more to the post office and grocery store. I had received a supply box from Noora, but I sent it on to Fontana. An unopened package can be forwarded for free.

In the last few days I’ve been fighting with my headphones, and thought they had broken, but when I tested out new headphones today the problem continued. I’ve determined that the headphone adapter for my Lifeproof case is defective, and the headphones don’t work because of that. Fiddling with such small, but important to me, things while hiking is a little frustrating.

I took an affordable three dollar shuttle from Macon County Transit back to Rock Gap, and started racking up miles again. My legs were like new after a rest day, and progress was remarkably easy. I met a trail crew for the first time on the way: a group of local college students were out with hoes refreshing the trail surface. As I approached the call of “Hiker!” ran through the group and I passed the group feeling quite regal as they paused their work.

I swung by Siler Bald Shelter, but on the shady side of the valley was surprisingly cold, and the place was not inviting. Today it feels quite summer-like on the sunny slopes, while the shadows still hold snow and winter. So I walked a few miles further and met two hikers who had set up at a picnic area. The place was very nice and sunny, so I ended up being their tent neighbors.

Ennen Franklinista lähtöä pääsin toisten vaeltajien kyydissä vielä käymään postissa ja ruokakaupassa. Olin saanut Nooralta varustepaketin, mutta lähetin sen eteenpäin Fontanaan. Avaamattoman paketin kun voi onneksi pistää eteenpäin ilmaiseksi.

Olen lähipäivinä taistellut kuulokkeideni kanssa ja luulin niiden hajonneen, mutta koeajaessani tänään uusia kuulokkeita ongelmat jatkuivat. Tulin siihen tulokseen, että Lifeproof-kännykkäkoteloni vaatima kuulokejohdon jatkopala on viallinen ja sen takia kuulokkeet eivät toimi. Tällaisten pienten, mutta itselle tärkeiden asioiden kanssa askartelu on vaeltaessa hieman turhauttavaa.

Pääsin Macon County Transitin edullisella, kolmen dollarin, shuttlella takaisin Rock Gapiin ja sain taas alkaa nielemään maileja. Jalat olivat lepopäivän jälkeen kuin uudet ja kulku oli hämmentävän helppoa. Tapasin matkan varrella ensimmäistä kertaa reitin kunnostajia: paikallisen collegen opiskelijat olivat kuokan varressa uudistamassa polun pohjaa. Tullessani kohdalle kulki joukon läpi ilmoitus: “Hiker!” Ja kuljin jokseenkin kuninkaallisen tuntuisesti kuokinnan tauottaneen joukon ohi.

Kävin pyörähtämässä Siler Bald Shelterillä, mutta mäen varjopuolen laaksossa oli yllättävän kylmä eikä paikka houkutellut. Tänään on ylipäänsä ollut aurinkoisilla rinteillä ihan kesäkeli ja varjossa lunta ja talviolosuhteet. Niinpä kävelin pari mailia pidemmälle ja kohtasin kaksi picnic-paikalle leiriytynyttä vaeltajaa. Paikka oli todella mukava ja aurinkoinen, joten päädyin heidän telttanaapurikseen.
