Tentsite in Anza-Borrego Desert State Wilderness
I had made plans for breakfast with Gottfried, and we met at Miner’s Diner with his father. After breakfast, I went to pack up my gear and called Nina.
After returning to the main road in Julian with my packed gear I went to the post office to drop off the gear I was returning, and then continued again in Gottfried’s company to get apple pie. Julian is known for its pies and Mom’s Pies offers a free slice to hikers. We only had a chance to sit for a moment when Gottfried noticed Big Owl and her partner Donna on the other side. The reunion was joyous.
I milled around town for a while because I didn’t want to start hiking during the hottest part of the day. In the afternoon Gottfried’s dad left to take him to Stagecoach Trails RV Resort, and I hitched a ride with them to Scissors Crossing.
It was about two o’clock, so I stayed under the bridge with other hikers for a few hours. Someone had brought trail magic to the site in the form of food and drink, so the time passed pleasurably.
At four I started to climb the hill and the afternoon wind bolstered the travel nicely. I progressed at a brisk pace and didn’t really need any breaks. My aim was to go about ten miles and I easily reached that target. The sun set, and dusk settled, but it was still nice to travel by the light of my headlamp. I found a wonderful and fairly sheltered campsite, too, so the day left me feeling happy overall.
Olin sopinut aamiaisesta Gottfriedin kanssa ja tapasimme Miner’s Dinerissa hänen isänsä kanssa. Aamupalan jälkeen menin pakkaamaan tavarani ja soitin samalla Ninalle.
Palattuani tavaroineni Julianin pääkadulle kävin viemässä pois lähetettävät tavarat postiin ja sitten jatkoin taas Gottfriedin seurassa omenapiirakalle. Julian on tunnettu piirakoistaan ja Mom’s Pies tarjoaa vaeltajille ilmaisen palan piirakkaa. Emme ehtineet istua kuin hetken, kun Gottfried huomasi toisella puolella Big Owlin ja hänen kumppaninsa Donnan. Jälleennäkeminen oli iloinen.
Jäin hetkeksi pyörimään kaupunkiin, koska en halunnut lähteä vaeltamaan kuumimpaan aikaan. Iltapäivästä Gottfriedin isä lähti viemään häntä Stagecoach Trails RV Resortiin ja sain samalla kyydin takaisin Scissors Crossingiin.
Kello oli noin kaksi, joten jäin sillan alle muiden vaeltajien kanssa tappamaan aikaa pariksi tunniksi. Paikalle oli tuotu trail magicikiksi juotavaa ja syötävää, joten aika kului mukavasti.
Neljältä lähdin nousemaan mäkeä ylös ja iltapäivän tuuli siivitti kulkua mukavasti. Etenin tasaista napakkaa tahtia, eikä tarvetta tauoille juuri ollut. Tavoitteenani oli kulkea noin kymmenen mailia ja pääsin helposti tavoitteeseeni. Aurinko ehti laskea ja hämärä tulla, mutta otsalampun valossa oli mukava kulkea. Löysin erinomaisen ja melko suojaisan telttapaikankin, joten päivästä jäi kaikkiaan hyvä mieli.
