Day 106: Boiling Springs

I had decided to hike about 17 miles, to Boiling Springs. The weather forecast showed a 40 – 60% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Even though it was overcast, the air was thick and still. Even the forest was strangely quiet. In the morning I only saw a squirrel and a chipmunk.

I did a small side trip to Hunter’s Run Road and had lunch at a small country store that also had a deli. I ate a wonderful (and large) chicken wrap and exceptionally good fries. I was straight up surprised at the great price-to-quality ratio at the small store.

For some reason hiking itself was quite boring today and I felt tired. The terrain wasn’t hard, but it also didn’t offer any interesting views. The only exception was in the evening just before Boiling Springs when I arrived at the edge of a cornfield. I walked along the edge of the field marveling at the stalks and golden wheat pushing out of the ground.

On the south side of Boiling Springs is a free campground with porta potties, and as the sun set I arrived there. I was very tired and it was getting dark, so I decided to go into the town tomorrow and eat my own food tonight. The campground is right next to railroad tracks, and as I set up for the evening I listened to the horns and loud clanking. I hope it calms down for the night.

Olin päättänyt vaeltaa noin 17 mailia, Boiling Springsiin asti. Sääennuste näytti vaihtelevasti 40-60% todennäköisyyksiä ukkoselle iltapäivästä. Vaikka oli pilvistä, sää oli jotenkin tunkkainen ja ilma seisoi. Metsäkin oli kumman hiljainen. Näin aamupäivällä vain oravan ja maaoravan.

Tein pienen sivulenkin Hunter’s Run Roadilla ja kävin lounaalla pienessä kyläkaupassa, jossa oli myös deli. Söin erinomaisen (ja kookkaan) kanawrapin sekä poikkeuksellisen hyvät ranskalaiset. Olin suoraan sanoen yllättynyt pikkukaupan ruuan hyvästä hinta-laatu -suhteesta.

Jostain syystä itse vaeltaminen oli tänään hieman tylsää ja tunsin itseni väsyneeksi. Maasto ei ollut vaikeaa, mutta se ei myöskään tarjonnut mitään kiinnostavia näköaloja. Ainoa poikkeus oli illalla hieman ennen Boiling Springsiä saapuminen maissipellon laitaan. Kävelin peltoja pitkin ihaillen maasta tunkevia maissin varsia ja kullanvärisiä viljoja.

Boiling Springsin eteläpuolella on ilmainen teltta-alue bajamajoineen ja auringon laskiessa saavuin sinne. Olin hyvin väsynyt ja hämäräkin oli jo tulossa, joten päätin mennä itse kylään vasta huomenna ja syödä illalliseksi omia ruokiani. Aivan teltta-alueen vierestä menee junarata ja iltatoimia tehdessä kuuntelin pillien huutoa ja äänekästä kolinaa. Toivottavasti liikenne rauhoittuu yön ajaksi.
