Standing Bear Farm, TN
As I woke up I heard the wind. And if one can tell from wind that it will be followed by rain, this was just that kind of wind. I started to pack my things up quickly with the hope that I could get my tent down before it started to rain. My timing was quite spot on, because I had a chance to pack everything and hike a few hundred meters when the rain started.
At first the rain was light, but as the day went on it got harder and now my shoes were wet for the first time. I was like a soaked dog, and I was spurred on mainly by the fact that I knew I would get inside at the end of the day.
The last few kilometers were frustrating in soaking wet clothes. I had to keep moving constantly so that I would not get cold. When I arrived at Standing Bear Farm and got dry clothes on I was like a new person though. I hoarded Pepsi from the small but well stocked store, and warmed up a pizza for myself. Standing Bear Farm is an inexpensive and relaxed place of accommodation, which is kind of a cross between a campground and a hostel. Definitely worth seeing and experiencing, and a good place to launch forward after leaving the Smokies.

Herätessäni kuulin tuulen. Ja jos tuulesta voi erottaa, että kohta alkaa sataa niin tämä oli juuri sellainen tuuli. Aloin pakata tavaroitani ripeästi toivoen saavani teltan purettua ennen sadetta. Ajoitukseni olikin juuri sopiva, koska ehdin pakata kaikki tavarat ja vaeltaa muutaman sata metriä kun sade alkoi.
Aluksi sade oli kevyttä, mutta päivän myötä se koveni ja nyt ensimmäistä kertaa kenkänikin kastuivat läpi. Olin kuin uitettu koira ja menoa piti yllä lähinnä se tosiasia, että tiesin pääseväni päivän päätteeksi sisälle.
Viimeiset kilometrit olivat turhauttavia vaatteiden ollessa märät. Kokoajan oli pysyttävä liikkeessä, ettei tulisi kylmä. Saavuttuani Standing Bear Farmille ja saatuani kuivat vaatteet päälle olin kuitenkin kuin uusi ihminen. Hamstrasin Pepsiä pienestä, mutta hyvinvarustellista kaupasta ja lämmitin itselleni pizzaa. Standing Bear Farm on edullinen ja rento majoituspaikka, joka on jotain leirintäalueen ja hostellin väliltä. Ehdottomasti näkemisen ja kokemisen arvoinen paikka, josta on hyvä ottaa uutta vauhtia jätettyään Smokiesin taaksensa.
