Me and Dima had been examining the maps of Neulamäki area and knew that there were more cliffs near the Neulamäki icefall. We decided to find out if there were any other icefalls to climb. We took the same trail as before, but now headed down towards Vuorilampi. At the bottom of the gorge we took a right turn and begun to hike through the snow, scoping out the rock face that we were following. Finally we found ourselves from the bottom of the icefall, but we decided to hike further. After sloshing around a while, we reached Vuorilampi and took the trail to the campfire site that is in the other end of the pond. Then we headed back, crossing the pond to get better view to the cliffs. Nothing more than few meters (10 ft) high icefalls could be seen and we thought that we’d better hike back to the bottom of the “old” icefall.
After hour and a half of adventure in the snowy forest, we dug out our rope and Dima was ready to lead to the top of the icefall. The surface of the ice had melted into soft sludge, which was clearly a sign of the end of the ice climbing season. We had enough time to climb couple rounds both of us before I started to have a hurry to my saxophone lesson. Because the approach from the bottom of the icefall was a strenuous one, we decided to haul all our gear up and take the easier trail on the top. With the pulka this was actually quite a smooth process and finally I climbed as second to the top. Then we double-timed to the car and I headed to my sax lesson – wearing still all my climbing gear.

Olimme katselleet Diman kanssa kartasta, että Neulamäen jääputouksen lähellä olisi muitakin potentiaalisia jyrkänteitä. Päätimme lähteä katsomaan löytäisimmekö alueelta mahdollisesti uutta kiivettävää. Kuljimme tuttua reittiä kallion päälle, mutta päätimme jatkaa alas kohti Vuorilampea. Rotkon pohjalta käännyimme oikealle ja kuljimme osittain umpihangessa tutkaillen vieressä olevaa jyrkännettä. Päädyimme lopulta tutun jääputouksen juureen, mutta päätimme mennä vielä eteenpäin. Aikamme rämmittyä saavuimme Vuorilammelle ja kiersimme sen päädyssä olevalle nuotiopaikalle lammen reunaa kulkevaa polkua pitkin. Lähdimme sitten paluumatkalle lammen jään yli ja yrittäen saada sieltä parempaa näkyvyyttä jyrkänteelle. Mitään muutamaa metriä korkeampaa jääputousta emme kuitenkaan erottaneet ja lopulta päätimme suunnata takaisin “vanhan” jääputouksen juurelle.
Reilun puolentoista tunnin seikkailun jälkeen kaivoimme köyden esiin ja Dima liidasi Neulamäen jääputouksen päälle. Jää alkoi olla jo pinnasta sulaa mössöä, joten jääkiipeilykauden loppu alkoi selkeästi olla käsillä. Ehdimme kiivetä pari kierrosta kumpikin, kunnes minulla alkoi olla kiire soittotunnille. Koska putouksen lähestyminen alakautta oli osoittautunut työlääksi rämpimiseksi, päätimme haulata kaikki tavarat ylös ja poistua yläkautta kulkevaa polkua pitkin. Pulkan kanssa varusteet nousivat onneksi varsin hyvin ja lopuksi minä kakkostelin myös putouksen päälle. Palasimme juoksumarssia autolle ja minä suuntasin kaikkine kiipeilyvarusteineni soittamaan saksofonia.
