After the night accompanied by loud birds we took down the tent while it started to drizzle. We walked back to our car to meet the other people who were attending the trad climbing course. Before long we headed back to the forest and towards the Kakarsberget rock climbing cliffs. This area has many wonderful cracks that are ideal for trad climbing and also many bolted sport climbing routes.
First we discussed through the basics of abseiling and building the top anchor. I tried the first time to abseil without an ATC device and actually it goes rather smoothly using a carabiner and a HMS-knot. When the rain stopped we finally got to do some climbing too. After having an introduction on how to use the nuts and cams it was time to hug the rock. The plan was to first climb with a top rope and put in some protective devices, but somehow I found myself full body jamming in a chimney and leading trad. Well, as we say in Finland: practice is for those with no talent. I also succeeded to do some beautiful helmet jams and learned how to push a cam ahead of me in a large crack. A truly awesome day!
While we were about to call it a day it started to drizzle again, so we hurried back to the car. We drove to Iitti, since the second day of the course was going to take place at Reventeenvuori. Our course instructor, RCI Samuli Homanen, gave us a tip that we could camp near a beach and the place turned out to be perfect. We cooked out dinner before it was time to turn on my iPad and a small loudspeaker, so that we could enjoy the Eurovision Song Contest in out tent. The ESC finals from Vienna was a perfect entertainment after a long day.
Äänekkään linnunlaulun säestämien yöunien jälkeen purimme teltan tihkusateessa ja palasimme autolle odottamaan muita kurssilaisia. Ennen pitkää suuntasimme takaisin metsään ja kohti Kakarsbergetin kiipeilykallioita. Alueella on paljon hienoja trädikiipeilyyn sopivia halkeamia ja myös monia pultattuja sporttireittejä.
Kävimme aluksi läpi perusasioita laskeutumisesta ja ankkurin rakentamisesta. Tuli myös laskeuduttua ensimmäisen kerran ilman varmistusvälinettä ja hyvinhän se onnistuu myös sulkurenkaalla ja HMS-solmulla. Sateen loputtua pääsimme kiipeilemäänkin ja tutustuttuamme kiilojen ja camujen toimintaperiaatteeseen oli aika nousta seinälle. Ajatuksena oli toki aluksi vain laitella trädivarmistuksia yläköydellä, mutta jotenkin löysin itseni suoraan tekemästä kokovartalojammeja chimneyssa ja liidaamassa trädinä. No, lahjattomat treenaa. Tuli myös tehtyä kauniita kypäräjammeja ja opeteltua camun juoksutusta yhdessä isossa halkeamassa. Mahtava päivä!
Lopetellessamme alkoi taas sataa vettä, joten kiiruhdimme autolle, ettemme kastuisi. Kurssin toinen päivä on tarkoitus kiivetä Reventeenvuorella, joten ajoimme Iittiin ja leiriydyimme kurssiohjaajamme Samuli Homasen vinkkaamana uimarannan läheisyyteen. Ehdimme juuri sopivasti keittää iltaruokaa, kunnes oli aika virittää iPadin ja pikkukaijuttimen avulla kisakatsomo telttaan. Euroviisujen finaalilähetys Wienistä on mainiota viihdettä pitkän kiipeilypäivän päätteeksi.
