Low Gap Shelter, GA
A strong wind that started overnight didn’t engender happy feelings for the morning. My clothes were wet, but I had to get moving. I gathered motivation in the tent and put on one piece of wet clothing at a time, willing them to dry on me. I also noticed I had forgotten a bag of trail mix on my belt strap, and a mouse [or a squirrel, or a chipmunk] had chewed a hole in it.
I finally made it out of my tent, and as I packed up my stuff I learned that the couple in the next tent was one from Colorado I had met at Hiker Hostel. I set off a little ahead of them and we passed each other several times throughout the day. In the afternoon we hiked together and chatted about our backgrounds and how we ended up on the AT.
The day’s route was varied, but mostly easy. The Coloradans and I pulled off an 11-mile day – though this one was even easier than yesterday. We settled for the night in Low Gap, which was already full of tents and more hikers arrived as the darkness fell. Including another familiar couple whom I had been tent neighbors with on a few occasions. The evening would have been very pleasant, if it hadn’t been for a boisterous hiker-hero who was yelling so loudly that no one in the tent village could sleep.

Yöllä alkanut kova tuuli ei herättänyt rohkaisevia tunnelmia aamuksi. Vaatteet olivat märät, mutta liikkeelle pitäisi lähteä. Keräsin motivaatiota teltassa ja puin yksi kerrallaan märkiä vaatteita päälle, yrittäen saada ne kuivumaan päälläni. Huomasin myös unohtaneeni yöksi trail mix -pussin repun lantiovyön taskuun ja hiiri oli syönyt siihen reijän.
Pääsin lopulta teltasta ulos ja tavaroita pakkaillessa selvisi, että naapuriteltassa oli Hiker Hostellilta tuttu coloradolainen pariskunta. Lähdin hieman ennen heitä ja ohitimme toisiamme useamman kerran päivän aikan. Iltapäivästä vaelsimme myös yhdessä ja juttelimme omista taustoistamme ja päätymisestä AT:lle.
Päivän reitti oli vaihtelevaa, mutta pääosin helppoa. Vedimme yhdessä coloradolaisten kanssa taas 11 mailin päivän – joskin tämä oli eilistä helpompi. Asetuimme yöksi Low Gapiin, joka oli jo täynnä telttoja ja lisää vaeltajia tuli vielä pimeyden laskeuduttua. Myös eräs toinen tuttu pariskunta, jonka kanssa olin ollut pariin otteeseen telttanaapureina. Ilta olisi varsin mukava ellei joku uhoava vaellussankari huutaisi niin, ettei kukaan telttakylässä saa nukkua.
