Tentsite near Sunrise Hwy
The night was very windy, as is often the case in places with views. Around two I had to get out of the tent because the wind had yanked one of the stakes out of the ground. I tightened all my tie-downs while I was at it.
After a poorly slept night, I still got going in decent form. I coincidentally ran into Big Owl and Gottfried, with whom I had camped the first night. We pushed on together.
Big Owl’s partner had come to provide trail magic at Pioneer Mail Picnic Area. We got chips and candy bars from them, and fresh oranges from a local woman. Some other hikers joined us for lunch and the hottest part of the day passed nicely in the shade.
The rest of the day proved to be difficult. I hiked a part of the way with Big Owl and Gottfried, but the soles of my feet were unusually sore. I would really have liked to push more miles until dark, but I had to settle for less. Maybe a poorly slept night and carrying a heavy load of water had taxed me. As my glutes cried for mercy I stumbled into my tent to await the next day.
Yö oli todella tuulinen kuten maisemallisilla paikoilla usein. Kahden aikaan jouduin nousemaan ulos teltasta, koska tuuli oli kiskonut yhden kiiloista irti. Kiristin samalla kaikki narut uudelleen.
Kehnosti nukutun yön jälkeen aamu lähti kuitenkin kohtalaisesti liikkeelle. Törmäsin sattumalta Big Owliin ja Gottfriediin, joiden kanssa olin telttaillut ensimmäisenä yönä. Jatkoimme matkaa yhdessä.
Big Owlin kumppani oli tullut tekemään trail magicia Pioneer Mail Picnic Arealle. Saimme häneltä sipsejä ja patukoita sekä eräältä paikalliselta naiselta tuoreita appelsiineja. Lounasseuraksi tuli muitakin vaeltajia ja päivän kuumin hetki sujui mukavasti varjossa.
Loppupäivä osoittautui vaikeaksi. Vaelsin osan aikaa Big Owlin ja Gottfriedin kanssa, mutta jalkapohjiani särki epätavallisen paljon. Olisin halunnut puskea mielellään pimeään asti maileja, mutta jouduin tyytymään vähempään. Ehkä huonosti nukuttu yö ja valtava vesikantamus verottivat. Pakaralihakset hoosiannaa huutaen könysin vaivalloisesti telttaan odottamaan seuraavaa päivää.
