I hadn’t made a very detailed plan or goal for the day. Ahead the profile of Roan High Knob was imposing enough that I decided to take as many miles as the day would give me. The weather forecast also held a bit of tension with a 30-40% chance of rain and thunderstorms.
I hadn’t gotten the best of sleep because the tent was on a slight incline, and the other hikers were noisy unusually late. I got myself up after six, though, and before eight I was on the move.
During the day I met an older German couple from Hamburg several times, and two young men from North Carolina. We all repeatedly passed each other and had short conversations.
One opportunity was to spend the night at Roan High Knob Shelter which is the highest altitude shelter on the AT. I got such an energy spurt fueled by the cooler afternoon though, that I marched the long uphill stretch past the shelter without stopping. I decided to keep going as long as it felt good.
I finally ended up descending into Carvers Gap, and ascending from there to the next Round Bald. The clear peak was windy, but the scenic spot was enticing. I noticed another tent in the area, so I decided to camp there, too. I was quite satisfied in the end at this over 15-mile day.

En ollut tehnyt kovin tarkkaa suunnitelmaa tai tavoitetta tälle päivälle. Edessä olevan Roan High Knobin korkeusprofiili näytti sen verran huolestuttavalta, että päätin ottaa vastaan ne mailit mitä päivä tarjoaisi. Lisäksi sääennuste piti pienessä jännityksessä 30-40% sateen ja ukkosen mahdollisuudella.
En ollut nukkunut aivan parhaimpia yöunia, koska teltta oli hieman vinossa maastossa ja muut vaeltajat pitivät meteliä poikkeuksellisen myöhään. Sain itseni kuitenkin ylös kuuden jälkeen ja ennen kahdeksaa olin liikkeellä.
Tapasin päivän aikana useaan otteeseen hieman vanhemman saksalaispariskunnan Hampurista ja kaksi nuorta miestä Pohjois-Carolinasta. Kuljimme näiden seurueiden kanssa toistuvasti toistemme ohi ja kävimme lyhyitä keskusteluja.
Yksi mahdollisuus olisi ollut yöpyä Roan High Knob Shelterillä, joka on AT:n korkeimmalla sijaitseva shelter. Sain kuitenkin pilvien viilentämän iltapäivän siivittämänä sellaisen energiaspurtin, että painelin pitkän ylämäen päätteeksi shelterin ohi pysähtymättä. Päätin jatkaa siihen asti kun hyvältä tuntuisi.
Päädyin lopulta laskeutumaan Carvers Gapiin ja nousemaan sitä seuraavalle Round Baldille. Paljas huippu olisi tuulinen, mutta maisemallinen paikka houkutteli. Huomasin alueella toisenkin teltan, joten päätin itsekin majoittua tänne. Olin varsin tyytyväinen tähän lopulta yli 15-mailiseksi päätyneeseen päivään.
