Cosby Knob Shelter, NC
Two thin layers of kerlon create an illusion of privacy surprisingly smoothly. I slept in my tent last night, and the next one, as the shelters have been full of section hikers over the weekend (who have priority access to reserve space in the shelters unlike through hikers). While sleeping in the shelter has a certain ease, I enjoyed the privacy created under the green and yellow fabric. And there were no neighbors snoring into my ear, either.
I hiked a bit over 12 miles today, and I could have gone further, but probably not the 19 that would have been required to make it to the next shelter. Because of this I am happy that I will be getting out of the National Park tomorrow, since I won’t be restricted in camp sites and distance by shelters.
The day was sunny and downright hot. I was grateful for the pine forest of the higher elevation, which provides better cover in the spring time than deciduous trees. Coniferous forest feels somewhat homely, too.
Tomorrow promises about 10 miles of mostly downhill, as I descend out of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have Standing Bear Farm in my sights, and plan to stay in its hostel. My clothes are starting to smell uncivilized enough that laundry is probably a good call, too.

Kaksi ohutta kerrosta kerlonia luo yllättävän sujuvasti illuusion yksityisyydestä. Nukuin viimeyön ja myös seuraavan teltassa, koska shelterit ovat olleet viikonlopun myötä täynnä lyhyemmän matkan vaeltajia (joilla on varausoikeus sheltereihin toisin kuin läpivaeltajilla). Vaikka shelterissä yöpymisessä on tietty helppous, nautin kuitenkin vihreän ja keltaisen kankaan alle muodostuvasta yksityisyydestä. Naapuri ei myöskään kuorsaa aivan kyljessä kiinni.
Vaelsin tänään reilun 12 mailia ja enemmänkin olisi mennyt, mutta ei ehkä sitä 19 mailia, jota seuraavalle shelterille pääseminen olisi vaatinut. Tämän vuoksi olen tyytyväinen päästessäni huomenna pois Smokiesin alueelta, koska shelterit eivät sitten enää sanele yöpaikkoja ja siten mahdollisia päivämatkoja.
Päivä oli aurinkoinen ja suorastaan kuuma. Olin kiitollinen korkeamman ilmanalan mäntymetsästä, joka tarjoaa näin keväällä enemmän suojaa kuin vielä lehdettömät puut. Havumetsä tuntuu myös jotenkin kotoisalta.
Huomenna on luvassa noin 10 mailia lähes pelkkää alamäkeä, kun laskeudun pois Great Smoky Mountainsin kansallispuistosta. Tähtäimessä on Standing Bear Farm, jonka hostellissa aion yöpyä. Vaatteet alkavat jo haista sen verran yhteiskunnasta vierottuneelta, että myös pyykinpesu voi olla tarpeen.
