Fontana Village Resort, Fontana Village, NC
When heading toward a city travel is always a little easier. It’s not really about the need to get back to civilization, as it is about getting to eat and choose my own food. I’ve noticed while hiking, that happiness does come from simple things. Bread, salad, or just having water. I went a couple of miles without water today. Even though this wasn’t any emergency, strangely I couldn’t think of anything else except water, when I was thirsty and there wasn’t water.
As I arrived in Fontana I encountered a soda vending machine, which created almost unfathomable joy. At this intersection was also a phone to call a shuttle, but I had decided to hike to Fontana Dam. On the way I went past the best-equipped shelter on the AT which is fondly known as the Fontana Hilton. In addition to the shelter it has showers, drinking water, and a solar powered cell phone charging station.
Fontana Dam has a visitor center, but the place was under renovations and there wasn’t anyone there except construction workers on lunch. Getting a shuttle ride proved to be problematic, because contrary to my guide book even Verizon didn’t have any service at the dam. I walked a little ways back the trail and when I got service I called myself a ride.
I checked in to Fontana Village Resort which also arranges the afore mentioned shuttle rides for the inexpensive price of $3. Most of the village of Fontana actually consists of vacation rental cabins and services. The hotel is inexpensive to start, but the company also offers a significant discount for through hikers, so it also works for a traveler on a budget.

Suunnatessa kohti kaupunkia matka kulkee aina hieman kevyemmin. Kyse ei ole niinkään tarpeesta päästä sivistyksen pariin vaan halusta päästä syömään ja valitsemaan ruokansa. Olen huomannut vaeltaessa, että onnellisuus tulee aika pienistä asioista. Leivästä, salaatista tai ihan vain siitä, että on vettä. Kuljin nimittäin muutaman mailin ilman vettä tänään. Vaikka mitään hätää ei ollutkaan niin jotenkin kummasti sitä ei pysty ajattelemaan mitään muuta kuin vettä, jos on jano eikä vettä ole.
Fontanaan saapuessani tuli vastaan pian myös Cola-automaatti, mikä tuotti lähes kohtuutonta iloa. Tässä tienristeyksessä oli myös puhelin shuttle-kyydin soittamiseen, mutta olin päättänyt vaeltaa Fontanan padolle asti. Matkalla kuljin AT:n parhaiten varustellun shelterin ohi, joka kulkee yleisesti nimellä Fontana Hilton. Suojan lisäksi paikalla on nimittäin suihkut, juomavesihana ja aurinkokennoilla toimiva kännykänlatauspiste.
Fontanan padon luona on Visitor Center, mutta kyseinen pulju oli remontin alla eikä paikalla ollut muita kuin lounastavat raksamiehet. Shuttle-kyydin hankkimisessa myös ilmeni ongelmia, koska poiketen opaskirjani tiedoista, edes Verizonin liittymällä ei ollut kenttää padolla. Kävelin lyhyen matkan takaisin päin ja päästyäni verkon kuuluvuusalueelle soitin itselleni kyydin.
Tulin yöksi Fontana Village Resortiin, joka myös järjestää edellä mainitsemiani shuttle-kyytejä edulliseen $3 hintaan. Suurin osa Fontanan kylästä on itseasiassa tämän lomaresortin mökkejä ja palveluja. Lähtökohtaisesti hotelli ei ole edullisimmasta päästä, mutta firma tarjoaa varsin tuntuvan alennuksen läpivaeltajille, joten paikka sopii myös budjettimatkailuun.
