I decide to make the day’s program about 15 miles again. A slightly heftier breakfast gave more kick to this project, and I think I will put more emphasis on breakfast going forward.
At the start it snowed… well flurries really. The icy scenery experienced a complete change again during the day, as the sun warmed things up. Another thing to be noted in reference to the weather, today was the first time I didn’t put on my down coat as soon as I stopped hiking, but instead after I was done with my evening preparations.
About half way through the day I encountered the biblically dramatically named Jacob’s Ladder. This rise of over 200 meters in under a kilometer wasn’t a ladder to heaven, as much as a hellish uphill.
The day’s efforts were evened out a mile before my campsite with trail magic. A fellow who had through hiked in 2015, and his girlfriend with whom he is heading to the PCT this year had already stopped grilling burgers, but gave me a few Snickers bars.
As I hike I often get an ear worm (almost to the point of insanity). In the past few days my brain has offered up such gems as a childhood favorite Mörkö se lähti piiriin [the troll danced in a circle], Bon Jovi’s Always, and Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You. Today instead of music, I was treated to a piece of a Robert Frost poem:
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”

Päätin ottaa päiväohjelmaksi taas reilun 15 mailin matkan. Hieman aiempaa tukevampi aamupala antoi tälle projektille paremmin potkua ja ehkä yritän jatkossakin panostaa aamiaiseen.
Alkumatkasta satoi lunta…tai ehkä oikeammin ilmassa leijaili jäähilettä. Jäinen maisema koki taas päivän aikana täyden muutoksen, kun aurinko alkoi lämmittää. Merkillepantavaa lämpötilan suhteen on myös se, että tänään ensimmäistä kertaa en pukenut untuvatakkia heti vaelluksen loputtua vaan vasta tehtyäni iltatoimet.
Noin puolivälissä matkaa tuli vastaan dramaattisen raamatullisesti nimetty Jacob’s Ladder, Jaakobin tikkaat. Tämä alle kilometrin matkalla oleva noin 200 m nousu ei ole mitkään tikapuut taivaaseen vaan pikemminkin helvetillinen ylämäki.
Tasotuksena päivän puurtamiselle tuli onneksi mailia ennen yöpaikkaa trail magic. Vuonna 2015 AT:n läpivaeltanut ja tänä vuonna tyttöystävänsä kanssa PCT:lle suuntaava mies oli jo lopettanut hampurilaisten paistamisen, mutta antoi pari Snickers-patukkaa matkaan.
Vaeltaessa minulla alkaa usein soida joku kappale (lähes hulluuteen asti) päässä. Lähipäivinä on aivoradio tarjonnut mm. lasten klassikkoa Mörkö se lähti piiriin, Bon Jovin Alwaysia ja Dolly Partonin I Will Always Love Youta. Tänään musiikin sijaan päässä pyöri pätkä Robert Frostin runosta:
