My father had arrived after the nightfall from his hike down from Zugspitze. That’s why we left him packing in the morning while I went to get our rental car from Europcar with Dima. We had calculated that renting the car for a week plus the gas would be cheaper option than buying the fights to Switzerland for three of us. Even though we would need the car only for getting there and back again, it was cheaper to rent it for a whole week than to leave it to another country.
We left Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 11 am and drove through Austria and Liechtenstein to Switzerland and to canton of Valais. At 15:30 we had a lunch break in a small village called Sedrun. We happened to arrive there inconveniently in between the lunch time and the supper time, when the restaurant was serving only a few items from their menu. After enjoying the ample Bavarian servings, the ones in the restaurant of Hotel Postigliun seemed to be really small and very pricey.
Our destination, Zermatt, is a car free town, so we drove our car as near as we could – to the little village called Täsch. There is a seemingly unreasonable amount of parking garages in the tiny Täsch, since many tourists leave their car there. I had made my research and knew that the garage at the train station would be the most expensive and we decided to avoid it. But immediately after the train station, on the right hand side, we found a decent priced garage under the Täscher Hof. One week stay costs 70 CHF and there is a convenient pathway from the garage straight to the train station. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn has a Zermatt Shuttle that serves between Täsch and Zermatt every 20 minutes (22:30-05:30 it goes only once in an hour).
The short train ride took as after 7 pm to the official Toblerone town of the land of the cheese: Zermatt that lies under the stunning Matterhorn. The town is known as being expensive, but I succeeded finding an apartment (big enough for six people) cheaper than any hostel through Airbnb. The fully equipped apartment was up on the hillside, but after climbing nearly 100 stairs we had a truly spectacular view.
Isäni oli palannut vasta illan pimennyttyä vaellukseltaan alas Zugspitzeltä. Aamulla jätimmekin hänet vielä pakkaamaan, kun lähdimme Diman kanssa hakemaan vuokra-autoamme Europcarilta. Olimme laskeneet, että auton vuokra viikoksi ja bensakulut tulisivat halvemmaksi kuin lentoliput kolmelle Sveitsiin. Vaikka emme tulisi tarvitsemaan autoa kuin meno- ja paluumatkaan, kannatti se vuokrata koko ajaksi, koska vuokra-auton luovuttaminen eri maahan olisi nostanut hintaa merkittävästi.
Lähdimme yhdentoista aikaan ajamaan Garmisch-Partenkirchenistä Itävallan ja Liechtensteinin kautta Valaisin kantoniin Svetisiin. Pysähdyimme puolen neljän aikaan pienessä Sedrunin kylässä lounaalla. Osuimme epäkiitollisesti lounas- ja illallisajan väliin, jolloin tarjolla oli vain rajallinen ruokalista. Baijerin notkuvien pöytien äärestä tulleena Hotel Postigliunin annokset tuntuivat kohtuuttoman pieniltä ja kalliilta.
Ajoimme autolla pikkuiseen Täschiin asti, koska kohteeseemme Zermattiin ei pääse autolla. Tämän vuoksi juurikin Täschissä on kokoonsa nähden kohtuuton määrä parkkihalleja. Olin lukenut juna-aseman parkkihallin olevan kallein, joten päätimme vältellä sitä. Kohtuuhintainen parkkihalli löytyikin heti aseman jälkeen oikealta, josta menee ramppi Täscher Hofin alle. Viikkotaksa on kesällä 70 Sveitsin frangia ja hallista on suora kulku asemalaiturille. Täschin ja Zermattin välillä kulkee Matterhorn Gotthard Bahniin kuuluva Zermatt Shuttle -juna kolmasti tunnissa (22:30-05:30 kerran tunnissa).
Lyhyen junamatkan päätteeksi saavuimme seitsemän jälkeen juustomaan viralliseen Toblerone-kaupunkiin eli Matterhornin juurella sijaitsevaan Zermattiin. Paikka on tunnettu kalliista hintatasostaan, mutta onnistuin löytämään meille hostellejakin halvemman yöpaikan Airbnb:n kautta. Täysin varusteltu kuuden hengen huoneisto vaati nousemista lähes sata porrasta kaupungin rinteelle, mutta näköala oli ponnistelujen arvoinen.
