Day 19 – Día del Trabajador in Hospital de Órbigo

May Day, or día del trabajador, is a public holiday in Spain as well. Luckily, I’d come prepared with my own breakfast, because absolutely nothing was open in the morning.

The route splits into two options at La Virgen del Camino. True to form, I picked the one that didn’t follow the main road, even though it was a bit longer. Turned out to be a wise choice—I later heard from other pilgrims that the shorter option was a proper nightmare thanks to the traffic.

Last night’s heavy rain had softened up the dirt tracks (sometimes into mud), which made the terrain a lot gentler on the feet. My soles do ache every day, but today they were unusually well-behaved.

I’ve only seen one bunny on the Camino before, and today I spotted another. Both were tiny—only a bit bigger than a guinea pig. Might well be an Europen rabbit, which lives on the Iberian peninsula.

Thanks to the rain, the ditches and irrigation channels along the fields were overflowing. From the duckweed-covered ditches came the loud croaking of frogs. I didn’t manage to spot any of these bath-loving Fräulein Helgas, though I did catch a glimpse of one thigh popping out of the water.

Having passed by León yesterday without stopping, I noticed the same thing that’s happened after other cities: the pilgrims around me had changed. Today I didn’t see any familiar faces, except for one Canadian woman and a French man I’d come across before.

I had booked a bed in a dorm in the village of Hospital de Órbigo, and the 28 km (17.4 mi) day felt just right for the terrain. I had time for a bit of a rest and managed to get my laundry done before the pilgrim dinner. The food was good, but the group was awfully noisy—bit of a shock to the system after a few peaceful evenings.

After today, there’s “only” less than 300 km (186.4 mi) left to go. And nearly 500 km (310.7 mi) already behind me. I can’t deny I’m starting to look forward to reaching the end—sorting out accommodation every single day does wear you down. The walking itself is usually lovely, once you’ve got yourself going in the morning.

Vappu eli työväen juhla, tai día del trabajador, on vapaapäivä myös Espanjassa. Olin onneksi varautunut siihen omalla aamupalalla, koska aamulla mikään paikka ei ollut auki.

Reitti haarautuu kahteen vaihtoehtoon La Virgen del Caminossa. Valitsin tapani mukaan sen, joka ei seuraa valtatietä, vaikka se oli vähän pidempi. Eikä valinta ollut huono, koska myöhemmin kuulin muilta vaeltajilta lyhymmän reitin olleen liikenteen takia todella epämieluisa.

Viimeöinen rankkasade oli myös pehmittänyt hiekkateitä (osin mudaksi), mikä teki maastosta mukavamman jalkaterille. Jalkapohjat kyllä kipeytyvät joka päivä, mutta tänään huomattavan vähän.

Olen nähnyt kerran aiemmin Caminolla pienen pupun ja tänään näin toisen. Molemmat olivat huomattavan pieniä – vähän marsua isompia. Kyseessä saattaa olla Iberian niemimaalla elävä villikaniini.

Sateen jäljiltä myös ojat ja peltojen kastelukanvat olivat täynnä vettä. Pikkulimaskoiden peittämistä ojista kuuluikin sammakoiden äänekästä kurnutusta. En tosin onnistunut näkemään yhtäkään näistä Helga-neideistä kylvyssä, vaikka yksi reisi pinnalla vilahtikin.

Ohitettuani eilen Leónin sinne jäämättä huomasin taas saman ilmiön kuin aiemmin isojen kaupunkien jälkeen: minua ympäröivät vaeltajat olivat vaihtuneet. En tänään nähnyt tuttuja lukuunottamatta erästä kanadalaisnaista ja ranskalaismiestä.

Olin varannut makuusalipaikan Hospital de Órbigon kylästä ja 28 km päivä tuntui maastoon nähden sopivalta. Ehdin hieman lepäillä ja sain pyykkini pestyä ennen vaeltajaillallista. Ruoka oli hyvää, mutta seurue oli kovin meluisa ja se tuntui kuormittavalta rauhallisten iltojen jälkeen.

Tämän päivän jälkeen vaellettavaa on ”enää” alle 300 km. Ja lähes 500 km on kävelty. Odotan kieltämättä jo perille pääsyä, koska jokapäiväinen majoitusten selvittely on väsyttävää. Vaeltaminen itsessään on yleensä mukavaa, kunhan on aamulla päässyt liikkeelle.
