Ukonmäki Trail

As the number of sunny days keeps increasing, so does my excitement about hiking. Although the streets and backyards are already dry and snow-free, in the woods things are developing more slowly. That’s why I still need to wait until I can plan any longer hikes. But the musky scent rising from the earth is sending a tempting invitation.

After one night of unrestful sleep, I decided that getting some fresh air might be a good idea. I drove myself to the eastern side of Lappeenranta, Joutseno, to check a nature trail near the harbour. You won’t find Likosenlahti by accident, so using for example the restaurant Sataman Torni as a navigating spot might help. I parked my car in front of this restaurant, which remotely reminds me of the Moominhouse. There is space also on the other side, near the carpet washing place, but now it was still occupied by big piles of snow.

Some gaffers roaming around their boats still on trailers were giving me a pretty reserved look as I took off with my camera bag – perhaps I didn’t belong in the picture. I presume that the nature trail, which is only about one kilometre long (0.6 mi), doesn’t quite often draw that much attention. Well, despite that I shuffled between the carpet washing places, over the snow and around the puddles to the trail that circles the Ukonmäki hill.

Similarily to my last trip the trail was icy, but no treading in snow was required. Trail, following the shore, offered pleasant views to Lake Saimaa. Already in the beginning I noticed that the trail seems to be popular among the local dog walkers. And as such it’s no problem – the dog walkers keep the trail open through the winter. But unfortunately many of them had settled for letting their canine friends do their business right on the trail. Especially when the snow starts to melt this is rather unpleasant for a poo-pile-avoiding hiker. And it’s not actually really appreciating the Leave No Trace guidelines. (A pet is not a wild animal and its owner is responsible for its actions.)

While walking along I saw a small building by the lake and out of the curiosity went to see what it was. What at first glance seemed like a privy was actually a beach hut. The small rocky opening was apparently an unofficial beach.

About in the midway there was signs with the trail map and another saying welcome to the trail. It seems like the trail is meant to be approached by a boat. After this the trail takes a turn into the woods and from there uphill. Luckily going up the icy slope went ok.

While the beginning of the trail was going through a snowy landscape, on the top of the hill all the snow was gone, birds were singing and altogether it was full blown spring. Apparently the harbour side of the hill is such a shady spot that the snow is melting significantly slower.

Return to the harbour was type two fun, because the downhill leading there was an icy chute. Sliding sideways in surfer style took me to the bottom without falling. Rest of the trail took me back to the winter landscape. The Ukonmäki Trail is easy one, being only about one kilometre long (0.6 mi), but finding there requires a bit of navigation. Especially during the springtime there are poo piles to dodge, but then again the trail is likely doable during the winter too. There is no designated place to make a fire, but if you are returning towards Lappeenranta there is the possibility to stop at the Ilottula shelter to fry your sausages later in the spring, when the road there is free from snow.

Aurinkoisten päivien lisääntyessä intoni päästä vaeltamaan tuntuu kasvavan kasvamistaan. Vaikka kaduilla ja pihoilla on jo kuivaa ja lumet kadonneet niin metsässä tilanne ei ole vielä aivan vastaava. Siksi yritän vielä malttaa odottaa vähän pidempien retkien osalta. Kosteasta maasta nouseva mullan tuoksu kuitenkin houkuttelee metsään.

Erään huonosti nukutun yön jälkeen päätin, että pieni tuulettautuminen tekisi hyvää. Ajoin Lappeenrannan itälaidalle Joutsenoon ajatuksenani lähteä katsastamaan Joutsenon pienen venesataman tuntumassa olevan luontopolun. Likosenlahteen ei löydä vahingossa, joten navigaattorin maamerkkinä toimii vaikkapa veneseuran ravintola Sataman Torni. Parkkeerasin autoni etäisesti Muumitaloa muistuttavan ravintolan eteen. Myös alueen toisella reunalla mattojenpesupaikan tuntumassa on parkkitilaa, mutta se oli vielä lumikasojen täyttämää.

Vielä trailereilla istuvia veneitään päivystävät sedät katselivat minua hieman omituisesti lähtiessäni kamerareppuineni polulle – en tainnut oikein kuulua maisemaan. Ehkä noin kilometrin mittainen luontopolku ei ole omiaan houkuttelemaan ihmisiä kovin pitkästä matkasta. No, kaikesta huolimatta loikin mattojenpesupaikan lomassa hankien ja lätäköiden yli polulle, joka kiertää viereistä Ukonmäkeä.

Polku oli edellisen retken tapaan tallautunut jäiseksi, mutta umpihangessa ei tarvinnut tarpoa. Rantaa myötäilevältä polulta oli mukavat maisemat Saimaalle. Jo alkumatkasta huomasin, että polku on selvästi paikallisten koiranulkoiluttajien suosiossa. Eikä tämä itsessään ole mikään ongelma – koiranulkoiluttajat pitävät monet polut auki talvellakin. Mutta valitettavan moni oli tyytynyt kakattamaan koiransa aivan keskelle polkua. Tämä on etenkin lumien sulaessa pökäleitä väistelevälle kulkijalle epäkiitollista, eikä muutenkaan kuulu hyvään Leave No Trace -käytäntöön. (Lemmikkieläin ei ole luonnonvarainen eläin ja ihminen on sen toiminnasta vastuussa.)

Yhdessä kohdassa huomasin rannalla pienen rakennuksen ja menin mielenkiinnosta katsomaan mikä se on. Ensisilmäyksellä huussin näköinen rakennus osoittautukin pukukopiksi eli pieni kallioinen aukeama oli ilmeisesti epävirallinen uimaranta.

Noin polun puolivälissä tuli vastaani kyltit, joissa oli reittikartta ja toivotettiin tervetulleeksi luontopolulle. Tämä ilmeisesti tarkoittaa, että polkua on ajateltu lähestyttävän vesiltä. Tämän jälkeen polku kaartaakin rannasta metsään ja sieltä pian oikealle ylämäkeen. Jäisen ylämäen nousu sujui onneksi hyvin.

Siinä missä polun alku oli ollut lumista, niin päästyäni mäen toiselle laidalle olikin kaikki lumi kadonnut, linnut lauloivat ja tunnelma muutenkin keväinen. Ilmeisesti satamanpuoleinen reuna mäestä on niin varjossa, että lumi sulaa sieltä huomattavasti myöhempään.

Paluu satamaan oli asteen jännempää, kun sinne johtava alamäki oli sileä jäinen kouru. Surffaustyylillä liukumalla pääsin kuitenkin pystyssä alas asti. Loppumatka oli taas paluu talviseen maisemaan. Ukonmäen luontopolku on noin kilometrin mittaisena helppo kohde, mutta paikan päälle löytämiseen kannattaa käyttää käynnykkää navigointiapuna. Koiranjätöksiä saa väistellä aika tiuhaan ainakin näin alkukeväästä, mutta toisaalta polku on luultavammin talvellakin kuljettavissa. Tulentekopaikkaa ei ole, mutta Lappeenrannan suunnalta tulija voi kevään edettyä pidemmälle kotimatkalla pistäytyä esimerkiksi Ilottulan laavulla paistamassa makkarat.
