During the Two Nights challenge I’ve had a chance to visit several lean-tos near my home. Finally this weekend the weather seemed to be less rainy and I decided to collect one new target to my tick list.

Vuorinen lean-to is located near the eponymous lake, on the way from Kuopio to Karttula. When I was driving there the scenery was almost like from a fairy tale…or a horror story. I was in the middle of the fog, every now and then diving beneath and back inside it. Even though the super moon was supposed to appear during the next night, the moon was unusually bright tonight, too.

The dirt road leads to a gravel pit and the road immediately divides to the right hand side (it’s easy to miss this place). I would recommend leaving the car to the gravel pit unless one has a special reason to drive as close as possible and a very good ground clearance. After another turn to right the road leading to lean-to is full of all kinds of rocks and it has deep ruts. The trail starts at the end of this road.

I have spent a night on several beautiful places, which made Vuorinen lean-to an unpleasant surprise. There are two lean-tos in horrible condition: one has a floor made of wonky thin trees and the tarpaulin roof of the other one is collapsed. Next to these is an old goahti equipped with heavily bent wall panels that are covered with mildew. Also the chimney has collapsed ages ago. Still, I decided to sleep in the goahti, since I didn’t know if it might rain in the morning. I thought that I rather take the risk of the whole goahti collapsing on me than getting wet.

I had planned to walk to the lake Vuorinen, but I didn’t find any trail and finally the roaming around the thick forest in darkness didn’t seem that good of an idea. I really can’t recommend this place, not before at least one of these postapocalyptic shelters is upgraded.

Olen ehtinyt Two Nights -haasteen aikana jo tutustua moneen lähialueen laavuun. Nyt viikonlopuksi luvattiin vihdoin kirkasta säätä, joten päätin lähteä katsomaan taas yhden uuden kohteen.

Vuorisen laavu sijaitsee samannimisen pienen järven lähellä, jonkinmatkaa Kuopiosta Karttulaan päin. Tunnelma oli kuin sadusta tai kauhuelokuvasta ajellessani pimeässä sumun keskellä. Tien kumpuillessa sukelsin välillä usvakerroksen alle ja taas takaisin sen sisään. Seuraavaksi yöksi odoteltu superkuu näytti jo lupaavalta valaistessaan kirkkaasti tänäkin yönä.

Hiekkatie johtaa sorakuopalle, jonne saavuttua tie haarautuu heti (ja huomaamattomasti) oikealle. Auto kannattaa suosiolla jättää sorakuopan aukiolle ellei ole erityistä syytä päästä mahdollisimman lähelle ja hyvää maavaraa. Pian tämän jälkeen itse laavulle johtava tie nimittäin kääntyy oikealle ja kyseinen pätkä on kivinen ja urainen. Tien päästä lähtee laavulle polku.

Olen yöpynyt monella hienolla paikalla, joten Vuorisen laavu oli hieman epämiellyttävä yllätys. Paikalla on kaksi huonokuntoista laavua, joista toisen lattia oli tehty hyvin huteran näköisistä ohuista puista ja toisen pressukatto oli suurelta osin romahtanut. Näiden vieressä oli myös vanha kota, jonka sisäseinät olivat homeessa ja voimakkaasti taipuneet. Myös kodan savupiippu on hajonnut aikoja sitten. Päätin kuitenkin nukkua kodassa, koska en ollut varma sataisiko aamulla vettä. Päätin ottaa mielummin riskin kodan romahtamisesta kuin kastumisesta.

Ajattelin kävellä Vuorisen järven rantaan, mutta en löytänyt polkua ja lopulta pimeässä tiheässä metsässä hortoilu ei vaikuttanut erityisen loistavalta idealta. En voi erityisesti suositella tätä paikkaa ellei ainakin yhtä näistä kolmesta maailmanlopun suojista laiteta kuntoon.

Accompanied by a slight rain I headed north from Kuopio to Sorsasalo, which is on the left hand side right after the Kalla bridges. I left my car by a dirt road and walked a short distance in the dark woods to the Sorsasalo goahti – or actually it’s more like a BBQ shed than a goahti. There is parking space right next to the shed, but it is really nicer to walk than drive the road affected by rasputitsa (had to check that one from a dictionary). From the shed opens a beautiful view over the lake Kallavesi. Next to the BBQ shed is a wood shed (that is filled with way too large and hard junks of wood to be chopped with the poor axe) and behind it is a privy. When I walked down to the lake I noticed that this place serves also as a rest stop of a canoeing route.

The BBQ shed doesn’t have any floorboards and the benches are narrow, so I thought I have to sleep on the ground. Luckily I decided to check the privy before I was filling my mattress, because I found out that in the rear part of the wood shed is a small room. The space is approximately 2 x 3 m (6’6″ x 9’10”), sheltered from wind and rain, near the privy and there fits nicely 3 adults (and many more, if you really squeeze).

The rain has picked up, but I stay dry and comfy in my spacious housing. The summer is clearly coming, since the temperature doesn’t drop below 5°C (41°F). I have suffered from headaches after the nights spent outdoors and I think it’s caused by the tightness in my neck and shoulder muscles. That’s why I finally bought a travel pillow and wish for a relaxing night this time.

Pienen tihkusateen saattelemana ajoin tänään Kuopion pohjoispuolelle Sorsasaloon, joka on heti Kallaan siltojen jälkeen lännessä. Jätin autoni hiekkatien varrelle ja kävelin pimeässä metsässä lyhyen matkan Sorsasalon kodalle — tai itseasiassa kyseessä on ennemminkin grillikatos kuin kota. Auton saa parkkiin aivan grillikatoksen viereenkin, mutta kelirikon runtelemaa tietä pitkin on mukavampi kävellä kuin ajaa autolla. Grillikatokselta avautuu kaunis näkymä järvelle. Katoksen vieressä on puuvaja (joka oli täynnä turhan kookasta ja kovaa puutavaraa huonolla kirveellä käsiteltäväksi) ja sen takana huussi. Alas rantaan kävellessäni huomasin, että paikka on kylttien mukaan melontareitin varrella.

Grillikatoksessa on maalattia ja penkit ovat kapeat, joten ajattelin joutuvani tekemään petini suoraan maahan. Kävin onnekseni vilkaisemassa huussia ennen kuin aloin levittää patjaani ja huomasin puuvajan takaosassa olevan pienen huoneen. Noin 2 x 3 m kokoinen tila on hyvin suojassa, lähellä huussia ja nukkumaan mahtuu helposti kolme aikuista (tunkemalla monta enemmän).

Sade on yltynyt hieman aiemmasta, mutta tilavassa yksiössäni säilyy hyvin kuivana. Lämpötila on kylmimmillään 5°C, joten kesää kohti ollaan selvästi menossa. Olen kärsinyt aiempien reissujen jälkeen päänsärystä, joka on ollut seurausta hartioiden jumiutumisesta. Nyt otin mukaani hiljattain ostamani matkatyynyn, joten toivon rennompia unihetkiä.

In the evening me and my friend Dima took my car and headed to southwest from Kuopio, towards Karttula. After a short search in the dark we succeeded to find a narrow dirt road leading to Kivelä goahti, that’s located on a snowmobile trail. Once again there was a shed full of firewood and a privy. I don’t know if all goahtis usually have these. In addition this goahti and privy is accessible for a person using a wheelchair.

We have been enjoying the evening with some sausage and cream liqueur (impeccable combination) and taking long exposure photographs. I’m lucky to have a friend who understands that it’s clearly a good idea to stand completely still for 30 seconds. There is another car near the goahti, but we haven’t seen anyone. They might be doing a longer trek or perhaps there is a bloodthirsty murderer near Karttula…

Lähdimme illalla ystäväni Diman kanssa ajamaan Kuopiosta lounaaseen, kohti Karttulaa. Pienen etsimisen jälkeen löysimme kapean hiekkatien, joka johdatti meidät moottorikelkkareitin varrella sijaitsevalle Kivelän kodalle. Jälleen kerran paikalta löytyi myös puuliiteri ja huussi eli kaikki mukavuudet. En tiedä ovatko kaikki kodat näin hyvin varusteltuja. Tämän lisäksi sekä kotaan että huussiin on esteetön kulku, joten paikka sopii myös pyörätuolilla liikkuvalle.

Ilta on kulunut iloisesti makkaran ja kermaliköörin äärellä (pettämätön yhdistelmä) sekä pitkän valotusajan kuvia ottaen. Onneksi on ystäviä, jotka ymmärtävät miksi on ihan ilmiselvästi hyvä idea seistä 30 sekuntia aivan liikahtamatta. Kodan lähellä on toinenkin auto, jonka omistajista ei ole havaintoakaan. Joko he ovat lähteneet jonnekin pidemmälle retkeilemään tai ehkä Kuopion ja Karttulan välimaastossa liikkuu verenhimoinen kirvesmurhaaja…

After the dusk had turned into darkness, I drove to north from Kuopio planning to find the lean-to at Patteripolku. I really wasn’t sure how succesful my expedition in the dark woods would be, since I’ve never been here before. Luckily I decided to drive a little bit further in order to find a place for my car. I ended up finding the start of Patteripolku (which translates to artillery battery trail) and I found out that it was a nature and culture trail (I don’t know what’s the difference between these two – I think one has info signs about vegetation and the other about historical events).

After a short walk I found the lean-to, that is basically just a place for the campfire. The lean-to had only one narrow bench in it, so it wasn’t actually an ideal place for an overnight stay. Hammock would have been better choice than a mattress. As a outdoor meal I have a Star Wars chocolate egg with me, hence it’s the Palm Sunday (Finns don’t wait until Easter to eat those delicious things). But palms are nowhere to be seen and no signs of daylight saving time (that we call “summertime” in Finnish) either, because it’s snowing. Still the temperature is up to +1°C (34°F). And this time I will keep my feet warm, thanks to the wool socks that my granny made and a sleeping bag that I borrowed from my friend. I’m using Marmot Wave III Long sleeping bag, that is warm enough to sleep wearing soft shell. According to the Finnish standard the internet connection here is rather poor (GPRS or 2G) even though I’m not that far away from town.

Lähdin illan pimennyttyä ajamaan Kuopion pohjoispuolelle tavoitteenani löytää Patteripolun laavu. En ollut käynyt laavulla koskaan aiemmin, joten en tiennyt miten tehtävä pimeässä metsässä onnistuisi. Onnekseni ajoin tietä hieman pidemmälle parkkipaikan löytämisen toivossa, koska löysinkin Patteripolun alun ja samalla selvisi kyseessä olevan luonto- ja kulttuuripolku (en tiedä mikä näiden ero on – toisen varrella on kai kukkatauluja ja toisessa historiatauluja).

Lyhyen kävelyn jälkeen löysin laavulle, joka on pääasiassa nuotiopaikka. Laavu soveltuu yöpymiseen hyvin huonosti, koska sen sisällä on vain hyvin kapea penkki. Riippumaton kanssa pärjäisi paremmin. Evääksi olin ottanut Star Wars -suklaamunan näin palmusunnuntain kunniaksi. Palmuista ei tosin ole tietoakaan eikä juuri alkaneesta kesäajasta, koska lunta sataa. Siitä huolimatta, että lämpötila on noin +1°C. Jaloilla on kuitenkin tällä kertaa lämmin — kiitos mummon tekemien villasukkien ja ystävältäni lainatun makuupussin. Nyt käytössä on siis Marmot Wave III Long, jossa näyttäisi tarkenevan soft shell -vaatteissa. Internetyhteys (suomalaisen standardin mukaan) on yllättävän huono (GPRS tai 2G) vaikka kaupunki ei ole kovin kaukana.
