The big boys had told us last winter, that Laivonsaari island near Kuopio has a cliff where forms an icefall. Since we had been hammering the Haminalahti icefall to the bitter point of boredom we were more than willing to check out a new place to climb with Dima. In summertime you need a boat to access the island, but in winter you can just parade over the frozen lake.
We drove to Neulaniemi, all the way to the end of the Neulaniementie, where we parked our car. Then a short walk along the ice road and a right turn towards Laivonsaari. There was a ski track made with a snowmobile that we followed, passing Palosaari island and Parviaisniemi peninsula. Near Laivonsaari we left the ski track and started to walk through the snow, trying to reach the shore north from Nimismiehennokka. Luckily Dima had a pair of snowshoes, so he went ahead pulling our gear pulka with him and I (being the lighter one) was able to lope along the snowshoe tracks. We succeeded to hit the shore right were the icefall is, even though it wasn’t easy to see due all the snow.
At the bottom of the icefall we tamped down a belay spot and I demanded to be the one to deflower the ice. I chose the line that was in the middle of the icefall. I had to dig out some snow to even find the ice, but slowly I was able to proceed climbing. The surface of the ice that was under the snow was fragmented and loose. I had to really search to find any decent placement for my ice screws, because the thickness of the ice varied. Climbing wasn’t as straightforward as it is to climb a snowfree icefall, but then again it felt somehow more authentic. I was forced to constantly examine the quality of the ice and make new decisions how to climb. Exposed rocks also didn’t allow me to swing my ice tool where ever I wanted.
When I reached the top of the more than 10 m (more than 30 ft) high icefall, I built an anchor and abseiled down. Dima was next to lead and he chose the left line. The partially thin ice took him by surprise and Dima blunted one ice screw when it hit the rock surface. I climbed then the right line, because the chimney-like cavity at the beginning of the line felt inviting. Though my choice of the route ended up being less convenient, since I had to push myself through a bush in the middle of the climb. Just before the evening started to creep in Dima climbed the middle line that I had opened. Then it was time to walk over the lake and back to the car. Laivonsaari icefall wasn’t a spectacle beyond comprehension and the snow degraded the quality of the ice. The moderate steepness makes it still a good place for a beginner lead climber and the alpine conditions today actually served our climbing goals quite nicely.

Isot pojat olivat kertoneet edellisenä talvena, että Kuopion lähellä sijaitsevaan Laivonsaaren jyrkänteeseen muodostuu jääputous. Hakattuamme Haminalahden putousta lähes kyllästymiseen asti, lähdimme hyvin mielellämme Diman kanssa katsastamaan uusia kiipeilymahdollisuuksia. Kesällä saareen päästäkseen tarvitsee veneen, mutta talvella voi onneksi kulkea jään yli.
Ajoimme Neulaniemeen, aivan Neulaniementien päähän, jonne jätimme auton parkkiin. Jatkoimme kävellen lyhyen matkaa jääautotietä ja käännyimme sitten oikealle Palosaaren ja Parviaisnimen välistä menevälle hiihtoladulle. Saatoimme seurata moottorikelkalla ajettua reittiä lähes Laivonsaarelle asti, kunnes erkaannuimme reitistä suunnataksemme Nimismiehennokan pohjoispuolelle. Dimalla oli onneksi lumikengät, joten hän meni varustepulkan kanssa edeltä ja minä saatoin kevyempänä loikkia lumikenkien jäljissä uppoamatta hankeen. Onnistuimme tulemaan rantaan juuri jääputouksen kohdalla, vaikka putousta oli vaikea havaita kauempaa lumipeitteen takia.
Tamppasimme varmistuspaikan putouksen alle ja minä vaadin saada korkata jään lähtien ensimmäisenä liidaamaan. Valitsin putouksen keskeltä menevän linjan. Jouduin kaivamaan lunta pois tieltä päästäkseni käsiksi jäähän, mutta pikkuhiljaa saatoin edetä ylemmäs. Lumen alla oleva jää oli pinnasta sohjoa ja huonolaatuista. Jääruuveille sai etsiä tarkasti paikkaa, koska jää oli myös hyvin eri paksuista eri kohdista. Kiipeily ei ollut samalla tavalla suoraviivaista ja selkeää kuin puhtaalla jääputouksella, mutta se oli toisaalta jollain oudolla tavalla autenttista. Jäätä piti jatkuvasti tutkia ja tehdä päätöksiä mitä kautta olisi järkevin edetä. Joissain kohdin oli myös kiviä hyvin pinnassa, joten jäähakkua ei voinut lyödä minne tahansa.
Päästyäni reilun kymmenmetrisen putouksen päälle tein yläankkurin ja laskeuduin alas. Dima lähti seuraavana liidaamaan putouksen vasenta reunaa ja onnistui reitin puolivälissä ruuvaamaan jääruuvin kiveen. Jää oli paikoin siis hyvinkin ohutta. Minä liidasin vielä jääputouksen oikean reunan, jonka alussa oli kiinnostava chimneymäinen kolo. Reittivalinta osoittautui kuitenkin hieman erikoiseksi, koska jouduin puolivälissä tunkemaan kalliolla kasvavien puskien läpi. Dima kiipesi vielä avaamani keskilinjan, jonka jälkeen ilta alkoi tummua lähdön merkiksi. Kävelimme jään yli samaa reittiä takaisin autolle. Laivonsaaren putous ei ollut erityisen suuria tunteita herättävä kiipeilykohde ja jään kunto oli lumesta johtuen monin paikoin huono. Sen suhteellinen loivuus teki siitä kuitenkin hyvän kohteen aloittelevalle liidaajalle ja toisaalta tämän päivän alppihenkiset olosuhteet sopivat meidän yleisiin kiipeilytavoitteisiimme.
