Chilly Opening of the Ice Climbing Season

The early winter was hopelessly warm and snowless, hence the dreams of ice climbing were merely wishful thinking. The weather changed rapidly in January and when I returned from Christmas holidays me and Dima headed straight away to the icefalls. The icicle in Haminalahti wasn’t completely formed, so in crispy -25° C (-13° F) we decided to pay our very first visit to the icefall in Neulamäki.

Near Kuopio Prisma starts the Neulamäentie that you should follow all the way to the top of the hill and take left to Juontotie. Third on the left is Raiviopolku (that easily might go unnoticed) that leads to ice skating ring. The parking lot next to it is the best place to leave your car. From the parking lot you walk one block uphill and between Juontotie and Kaarnatie you find the trail that takes you to the forest. Many people walk their dogs daily along these trails, so even when it has been snowing the trail is usually passable.

You should follow the trail until you see signs that indicate directions down towards Vuorilampi and to right towards the overlook (“näköalapaikka” in Finnish). When you turn right here, you get to the top of the icefall (later we tried to approach the icefall from its base, but it takes far more effort). Follow the trail past the overlook (an open cliff with a nice view), until you reach the icefall. You can’t see the actual icefall from here, but you know that you are there when you see an ice flow crossing the trail.

We built a top rope anchor with a 30 m (98 ft) static rope, since there are no suitable trees at the ledge, but a bit further up. We abseiled down and saw that the cascading line on the left hand side was in climbable condition. On the right hand side there was only a thin sheet of ice. I think that the line on the left is possibly the easiest ice climb in Kuopio area and also very easy to approach. That makes it ideal for beginner ice climbers and perhaps a little less daunting place to learn lead climbing on ice, too.

We climbed a few rounds of the hard, but good ice with Dima. My hands were freezing while climbing, and then again my feet froze solid while belaying and standing on the ice. When the sun started to set, near 3 pm, we both climbed to the top and packed our gear. My feet were numb, but our spirits were high. Ice climbing season is finally opened!

Kolmas risteys vasemmalle on hieman huomaamaton Raiviopolku, jota pitkin pääsee ajamaan luistelukentälle, jonka parkkipaikka on mielestäni paras paikka jättää auto.
