Cold feet

I did survive my first winter night outdoors and I’m already back in the warmth of my home. I planned to stay at the lean-to until dawn, but the conditions forced me to do an alpine start. I had only one mattress with me and it clearly wasn’t enough insulation against the cold ground. Even though I was wearing plenty of clothes inside my sleeping bag, my feet started to freeze in the early hours. I could’ve jump around for a while to warm up, but after I got up I decided to return before the dawn.

This means that I will need more mattresses or actually I would like to buy a proper air mattress that would offer a better insulation. And updating my sleeping bag might be also a good idea, since my Halti Ultra 1200 S is far past its 10th birthday and has seen better days. The temperature dropped to -10°C (14°F) during the night and my gear wasn’t really sufficient. In addition I noticed that one might feel a wee bit claustrophobic in a tightly closed sleeping bag, if one likes to sleep in prone position and tends to twirl.
